Characters of our neighborhood

Our office location gives us a unique view of the world. As I walk down the block each morning on my way to work, I am greeted by a man in a wheelchair. I suspect he lives in the seniors’ home across the street from our office. I hear him before I see him. He has a beautiful voice and sings opera at the top of his lungs. Lately, he’s been wearing Hawaiian print shirts and shorts, and I notice that his knee is bandaged. I think he has an artificial leg. He never really acknowledges anyone, though I sometimes try, unsuccessfully, to catch his eye to give him a smile. He crosses the street to get the newspaper out of the vending box, and sometimes reads as he sings. Quite amazing, really.
